RCL54: Sleep Awareness Month Pt2 - ’Sleep Trackers’ with guest Dr Olivia Walch
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
After 18 months we're BACK! The response for last week's 'Sleep: The Silent Epidemic' episode has been fantastic - so very glad it has proved popular amongst the Runchatlive Community. We will continue to stream all episodes of the 'Sleep Awareness Month' LIVE to not just the STA YouTube Channel but also the Runchatlive Facebook Page so if you'd like to watch them live be sure to head to one of these sites at 8pm (GMT +1) every Tuesday in April.
In Part 2 of this month's 'SLEEP AWARENESS MONTH' on the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, we talk about 'Sleep Trackables' with special guest Dr Olivia Walch, CEO of Arcascope, a company that develops science-backed apps to help people fix their sleep and circadian rhythms.
With an estimated one in three people in the UK reporting regular sleep complaints, it is not surprising that sleep trackers have become enormously popular over the last few years. On waking up, our faithful Fitbit, Oura Ring or Withings Sleep Analyzer (to name just three) will inform you of the quantity & quality of your night's sleep, but just how accurate are they? Can the information these consumer sleep wearables provide be put to good use, or are they just another modern day gadget causing dependency and anxiety?
Special guest Dr Olivia Walch takes us through such questions to see how marketing claims hold up under the scrutiny of science, and discusses what role they can play in improving sleep health.
Topics discussed include:
- What is the difference between sleep trackers and sleep wearables?
- How long have sleep trackers/wearables been used to assess sleep quanitity/quality?
- How has the technology in sleep wearables changed over time?
- How do scoring algorithms work?
- How accurate are popular sleep wearables from Garmin, Fitbit, Oura Ring, etc?
- Can popular consumer sleep wearables measure stages of sleep?
- What is the relationship like between sleep researchers and consumer brands for wearables?
- If we see clients/patients are wearing sleep trackers, what sort of conversations should we be having with them?
- Can sleep trackers cause 'orthosomnia' - the obsession for 'perfect' sleep?
- Using sleep wearables to measure sleep consistency.
- Controlling light exposure: one of the easiest & most accessible ways to improve sleep quality/quanity

What is the Sports Therapy Association Podcast?
For those of you are unaware, in May 2020 I created the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, a weekly podcast with the mission of Putting the Evidence Back into Sports Therapy and Sports Massage Therapy. It gets streamed LIVE every Tuesday at 8pm (UK time) on the Sports Therapy Association YouTube Channel and is then uploaded to all popular podcast apps including Spotify.
Though it's not specifically about running related injury & performance, many of the topics covered will be useful to YOU, the listeners of Runchatlive Podcast, as we're essentially talking about issues that affect pain & performance. As is the case for Runchatlive, our listeners include health care professionals across the spectrum as well as active people of all levels looking for evidence informed strategies to stay fit and healthy!
This April 2022, we have a 'SLEEP AWARENESS MONTH', and because SLEEP is such a massively important topic, each weekly episode is being recorded live on not just the STA YouTube Channel but also the Runchatlive Facebook Page AND being uploaded to the Runchatlive Podcast feed for YOUR listening pleasure.
The four episodes are:
- 'Sleep: The Silent Epidemic' - April 5th with Jesse Cook, Clinical Psychology PhD Student and Sleep Researcher
- 'Sleep Trackers' - April 12th with Dr Olivia Walch, CEO of Arcascope, PhD Applied Mathematics.
- 'Sleep: Injury & Performance' - April 19th with Dr Jonathan Charest, Director of Athlete Sleep Service at Centre For Sleep & Human Performance
- 'In-Home Polysomnogram' - April 26th with Dr Amy M. Bender, Director of Clinical Sleep Science at Cerebra, including results of my 30 night Sleep study! Amy was my guest in August 2021 in Ep63 ‘How Sleep Affects Sports And Fitness’.
Feel free to join us LIVE on Tuesdays throughout April at 8pm (GMT+1)!

Paul Ingraham: Muscle Knots and Trigger Points - Run Chat Live #52
Friday Oct 09, 2020
Friday Oct 09, 2020
Visit a massage therapist and chances are you will be told you have muscle knots and maybe even 'Trigger Points'. Much of the therapist's work will strive to 'undo' these knots, maybe using 'Trigger Point Therapy'. But how much evidence is there that these knots are responsible for pain. What effect does 'releasing' them have? As runners, can we benefit from such 'release'?
Ep.52 of Run Chat Live Podcast brings you the undisputed forefather of putting evidence back into therapeutical care - Mr Paul Ingraham. If you are as yet aware of Paul Ingraham’s work via painscience.com, formerly known as saveyourself.ca, then buckle yourself in for an episode that is going to change your life. Though taste is obviously a personal thing, as far as writing style, humour & educational skills go, Paul Ingraham is still after many, many years one of Run Chat Live's TOP RECOMMENDATIONS for clinicians (and patients) looking to open the door to becoming more evidence based.
Check out Paul’s book about trigger points and muscle pain. That's behind a paywall, but there's also a long free article about trigger point science and controversies, and an introduction to basic trigger point therapy.

Alice Sanvito: Massage Therapy - How to be Evidence Based
Saturday Sep 19, 2020
Saturday Sep 19, 2020
Despite the popularity of massage, many of the common assumptions of what is happening physiologically are poorly evidenced. In this episode of Runchatlive, internationally acclaimed massage therapist Alice Sanvito talks to us about what massage does & doesn’t do for runners, and how therapists can make it work better.
We also discuss both therapists and runners can learn & evolve without feeling anger & frustration. Alice Sanvito is one of ten speakers presenting at this year's Runchatlive International Running Conference, Oct 29th & 30th Online. As one of just four therapists in the USA selected by Zhenya Kurashova Wine to be trained as instructors for the Kurashova Institute for the Study of Physical Medicine, Alice Sanvito has a great amount of experience in massage therapy, with a no nonsense science-based approach that makes her a leading figure in a number of online communities. Look out for her hashtag #shitmassagetherapistssay

Dr. Guillaume Millet: Ultra Trail Running - How To train to reduce fatigue
Monday Sep 14, 2020
Monday Sep 14, 2020
In the previous episode of Runchatlive, we had the honor of talking with Dr. Benno Nigg - founder, creator & director of the Human Performance Laboratory, University of Calgary, a multi-disciplinary research center with approximately 200 researchers & assistants working in every aspect of the understanding of movement and exercise.
In Episode 50, we are delighted to bring you Dr. Guillaume Millet, who from 2013 to 2018 worked at the Human Performance Laboratory directing the Neuromuscular Fatigue research team. Now back in France, Dr. Millet is Professor of Exercise Physiology in the Department of Kinesiology at Jean Monnet University, Saint-Étienne and the director of the LIBM laboratory (Inter-University Laboratory of Human Movement Biology).
His general research area investigates the physiological, neurophysiological and biomechanical factors associated with fatigue, including that associated with extreme (ultra-endurance, hypoxia) exercise, and in this episode of Runchatlive talks about training & fatigue in Ultra Trail Running.
We should add, Dr. Millet is himself no stranger to extreme exercise, with over 30 years experience competing in endurance sports including ultra-trail running, XC skiing and adventure races. The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® (UTMB) is widely regarded as one of the most difficult foot races in the world with a distance of approximately 106 miles and a total elevation gain of around 32,940 ft. - Dr. Millet has placed 3 times in the top 6.

Dr. Benno Nigg: Running Shoes - 40 years of research
Friday Sep 04, 2020
Friday Sep 04, 2020
Regarded by many as the important contributor to running related research over the past 40 years, Dr. Benno Nigg is Founder & director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Calgary, a multi-disciplinary Research Center concentrating on the study of the human body and its locomotion. He has received many awards and recognitions, including the Olympic Order, honorary degrees from the Universities of Salzburg and Innsbruck and an honorary professorship from the University of Shanghai.
In this episode of Runchatlive, he will be discussing the SCIENCE behind modern running shoes. What role have shoes truly played in the performance explosion we have witnessed since Eliud Kipchoge became the first man to break two hours for the marathon. 2019 also brought us twice as many men running under 2:10 and twice as many women under 2:27 compared to 2016. Eight of the twelve fastest men’s marathons in history have been run in the last year. How much of a factor has this new breed of shoe played? And more importantly, what is it in the shoe that could have made this possible?
With over 25,000 publications on human locomotion, in particular with relation to products such as orthoses, shoe insoles, sport shoes, surfaces and sport equipment, Dr. Nigg will be giving us an inside look at his latest study that appeared this August in the British Journal of Sports Medicine: 'The teeter-totter effect: A new mechanism to understand shoe-related improvements in long-distance running.'
An incredible hour, thank you once again Dr. Benno Nigg for giving us his time.

EN INGLES:
Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a very common injury in runners. It is the second leading cause of knee pain and the most common cause of lateral knee pain. To facilitate evidence-based management of ITBS, one needs to learn about the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this injury. This is often not as simple as it sounds because studies often contradict each other. Fortunately, in this episode of Runchatlive (for the first time in Spanish!) we have the pleasure of speaking with physical therapist Manuela Besomi, who has been working on ITBS as part of her PhD in Australia.

Hamish Vickerman: How To Overcome Plantar Fasciitis
Saturday Jul 04, 2020
Saturday Jul 04, 2020
Hamish Vickerman created The Fasciitis Fighter in reaction to research published by Michael Rathleff in 2014: 'High-load strength training improves outcome in patients with plantar fasciitis'. In this episode, we discuss how the Rathleff paper revolutionised the way Plantar Fasciitis (PF) should be treated, and in doing so we cast a critical eye on many of the traditional ways that runners & non runners deal with PF, often following advice handed out by therapists & GPs who are clearly not up to date with the evidence.
It's an eye opening episode which we hope you enjoy and take on board, whether you are a therapist or a runner. As always feel free to leave comments and questions in the comment section.

In this episode, Emma & Grainne discuss subjects including:
• Risk factors and contraindications to returning to running
• Signs & symptoms of pelvic floor and/or abdominal wall dysfunction
• Assessment of strength, impact management and readiness to run
• Key considerations such as breastfeeding, sleep and psychosocial factors

Nadeah Miranda: Love Gods & Marathons
Saturday Jun 06, 2020
Saturday Jun 06, 2020
Runchatlive Ep45: Nadeah Miranda 'Love Gods & Marathons'
Exciting curveball in this episode as we bring you with great delight an interview with musician & vocalist extraordinaire Nadeah Miranda.
Nadeah is an Australian singer-songwriter, model, and actress who shot to fame in the early 2000's as cofounder of Brighton based band 'The Lovegods'. The band won Radio 1’s best unsigned band and played Glastonbury three times. Nadeah then moved to Paris, joined Nouvelle Vague for three years and then put out three solo albums under the name Nadéah - Venus Gets Even (2011), While the Heart Beats (2016) and Milk Teeth (2019).
As a fan throughout those 15 years, it therefore gave me GREAT pleasure when I heard during one of Nadeah's Facebook Live sessions that she is interested in running a marathon... but hasn't yet. Like a rag to a bull, the goal was set.
In this special Runchatlive episode I ask Nadeah to comment of my favourite songs/videos that span her career to date, whilst Nadeah asks me about certain barriers she feels she has with regards to running a marathon. We had a great time recording this, despite a couple of internet connection issues, and totally recommend you check out Nadeah on Facebook with her regular live performances.
The debut ep 'DreamBitches' by Nadeah & Beki (teaming up with producer Marc Collin of Nouvelle Vague) was released in March and is available on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/3yRMeeFPDRPAvUdYkNNDjl
We hope you enjoy this episode of Runchatlive, and as always if you do please please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts / iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/runchatlive/id1446286174
