Why Do Runners Stretch?
Sunday Oct 14, 2018
Sunday Oct 14, 2018
#Ep6: Many runners devote a lot of time to stretching themselves, or going to a therapist to 'get' stretched. In this episode I look at WHY this is the case and HOW MUCH evidence there is for the assumed benefits.
This episode came about in response to some interesting questions put to me following last week's broadcast, and also to feedback I got from a presentation I gave at British Triathletes South East Division yesterday.
Most runners believe that static stretching before & after their run will reduce the risk of injury. many are encouraged to do so by coaches and therapists. It may well come as a suprise to hear that there is actually very little evidence to support this.
And there's more... stretching before a run may actually slow you down, and stretching after a run could increase muscle soreness! If this comes as a shock, you need to listen to this episode. If you enjoy it, do please leave comments and share with your running colleagues!
You may also want to check out last week's broadcast in which we looked at how in the case of certain running pain/injury, stretches commonly handed out can actually DELAY recovery, e.g. insertional achilles tendinopathy, proximal hamstring tendinopathy, insertional gluteal tendinopathy.
It's a world of confusion and misinterpretation, which is exactly why Runchatlive exists: to help dispel the myths and misconceptions that fill the world of running injury and performance.

How Stretching for Runners Can Delay Recovery from Injury
Sunday Sep 30, 2018
Sunday Sep 30, 2018
#Ep.5 - Many runners are not aware that with some types of injury, certain common ways of stretching can actually DELAY recovery. In this episode of Runchatlive we take a look.
Every week in clinic I see runners who have been struggling for weeks, months and maybe sometimes years with an ongoing pain/injury. In many of these cases, the runner is shocked to hear that the solution may well be stop doing that stretch every morning. As I explain in this episode, such injuries can include insertional achilles tendinopathy, proximal hamstring tendinopathy, insertional gluteal tendinopathy.
When, how much or indeed whether to stretch or not is a subject that causes much debate amongst runners and therapists, but if your passion for stretching is delaying your recovery then it's high time we clear a few misconceptions up!
As always, feel free to add comments if there is anything you agree/disagree with, or just want to share an experience. And if there is anything running injury/performance related you would like to hear us talk about in future episodes of Runchatlive then do let us know!
To HELP us reach more runners, we as always REALLY appreciate you sharing our content across social media, especially on Apple Podcasts/iTunes as that really helps! Thanks in advance and enjoy!

Running Economy: How To Improve It.
Sunday Sep 23, 2018
Sunday Sep 23, 2018
#Ep.4: Today we look at what the term Running Efficiency means and discuss how the best methods of achieving it may well differ from one runner to the next.
During the course of 20 minutes we consider what can be done to try and increase running efficiency, and also pitfalls that can surprise us if we go about it incorrectly.
As always, whether you are a runner, coach or therapist who works with runners, we woul dlive to hear if there is anything you agree/disagree with, or just want to share an experience. Also, use the comment section if there is anything running injury/performance related you would like to hear us talk about in future RunChatLive episodes.
Note On These Early Episodes
The first few episodes of Runchatlive are just me (Matt Phillips) on a phone, so don't expect much in terms of visual quality! In Episode 8we start having guests!

If It Ain't Broken: Changing Running Form
Sunday Sep 16, 2018
Sunday Sep 16, 2018
#Ep.3: Third episode in and things are warming up! This week we answer a question from Jack Chew of The Physio Matters Podcast (who actually returns in Episode 22 as a guest!): "To what extent we should try and tweak the running form of a pain free runner?"
A terrific question; in other words, if there's nothing broken should we try to fix it? Given that studies are yet to agree on what causes most running related injuries, blaming running technique for injury is a very grey area. For example, for every runner who runs with a dropped hip and suffers from Iliotibial Band Syndrome, there are a host of other hip dropping runners who are not suffering whatsoever.
It's a world of confusion and misinterpretation, which is exactly why Runchatlive exists: to help dispel the myths and misconceptions that fill the world of running injury and performance.

It's Your Anatomy: Why runners should not be obsessed with symmetry

#Ep.2: In our second episode of Runchatlive, we take a look at the importance of Health Care Professionals monitoring the language they use when communicating with people in pain.
It was sparked by a person who visited me last week with a letter from an orthopaedic consultant which as an explanation for the patient as to why they were in pain used the sentence "It's your anatomy". What's the problem with that I hear you ask. Well, watch the video and I will try to explain.
Feel free to add comments if there is anything you agree/disagree with, or just want to share an experience. And if there is anything running injury/performance related you would like to hear to hear discussed on Runchatlive then do let us know!

My Experience Running With Kenyans
Sunday Sep 02, 2018
Sunday Sep 02, 2018
#Ep.1: Welcome to where it all started... the very first episode of RunChatLive, recorded just before a Sunday clinic shift without any planning, using nothing else except a phone...
The idea was prompted by my return from a recent trip to Kenya where I had the pleasure of training the staff of a new company set up to provide runners of East Africa with a fantastic, evidence based running hub. Fast forward a year and Run Beyond is in full force in Gigiri, Nairobi, offering Gait Analysis, Running Footwear, Coaching, Strength Training, Physiotherapy and much more.
The first few episodes of Runchatlive are just me (Matt Phillips) on a phone, so don't expect much in terms of visual quality! In Episode 8 we start having guests. In this opening episode you will hear me talking about the essential components of a successful Gait Analysis and how we can use it to create a more efficient runner. We look at its benefits in helping runners recover from injury and discuss the potential pitfalls of using it to seek 'perfect' running form or 'prescribing' running shoes.
During my time in Kenya, I also had the opportunity of joining the team for a highly enjoyable training session in Karura Forest, under the guidance of legendary Kenyan running coach Jimma'Simba' Beauttah, chief trainer at the IAAF Kip Keino High Performance Training Centre in Eldoret.
As coach to elite runners such as Abel Kiprop, Moses Kiptanui and Daniel Komen, Coach 'Simba' has over his thirty years involvement in Kenyan running produced eight World Championship medals, three Olympic medals and two Commonwealth Games medal; a truly inspirational figure with whom I spent many hours chatting and above all listening.
And so the mission of Runchatlive began... to help dispel myth & misconception from the world of running injury and performance. Want to HELP spread the us? If so then please our episodes across social media, especially on Apple Podcasts/iTunes as that really helps us reach new listeners. Thanks in advance and enjoy!
