JF Esculier: Should All Runners Ne Wearing Minimalist Footwear?
Monday May 20, 2019
Monday May 20, 2019
#Ep.24: "All novice runners should consider minimalist shoes" - says JF Esculier, Vice President & Director of Research & Development at The Running Clinic Vancouver, and our special guest for this episode!
In 2009, 'Born To Run' by Christopher MacDougall sparked an explosion in barefoot running, fuelled in no small part by the research of Professor Daniel Lieberman producing anatomical evidence that humans are the world’s best distance runners, meaning the wearing of shoes is therefore abnormal.
In the ten years that pursued, many runners discovered the hard way that progressing too quickly into barefoot running or minimalist shoes can bring rapid injury, especially to the achilles and calf complex, but there are still many who believe that novice runners in particular should not be afraid to try minimalist shoes instead of immediately opting for the traditional heavily cushioned and structured shoe.
Jean-Francois (JF) Esculier graduated as a physiotherapist in 2009 and has been combining clinical and research work ever since. As Vice President & Director of Research & Development at The Running Clinic Vancouver, a company founded by Blaise Dubois (former consultant for Athletics Canada), JF certainly presents a thorough argument in this episode, which is hardly surprising as the Running Clinic is today a leading international source of information in the prevention of running injury.

Tuesday May 07, 2019
Tuesday May 07, 2019
#Ep23: My guest on this episode was meant to be Dr Derek Griffin but sadly technical difficulties prevented this (we will be rescheduling). But fear not, from its ashes an impromptu Q&A was born...
Faced with listeners who had tuned in for the LIVE recording of this podcast on our Facebook Page, this episode became an on the spot Q&A with host Matt Phillips, aka Me. According to feedback so far, it was received pretty well! We may well even make it a regular thing!

Tina Muir: Athletic Amenorrhea in Female Runners
Tuesday Apr 09, 2019
Tuesday Apr 09, 2019
#Ep21: Athletic Amenorrhoea is a condition caused by overtraining in which menstruation becomes irregular or totally ceases. Many female athletes either regard it as a normal part of becoming the best or suffer in silence due to it still being regarded as a taboo subject.
In 2016, our special guest Tina Muir (founder and host of podcast Running for Real) was a professional runner and Olympic hopeful at the peak of her career, when suddenly after running the London Marathon in 2 hours 37 minutes she announced her retirement. The reason came soon after as Tina admitted that for 9 years of her 14-year running career she had ceased menstruation. Aware that athletic amenorrhea can reduce fertility, Tina made the decision to not only stop running but also speak out publicly about her 9 year battle to help inform other female runners of the dangers of this all too often silently suffered issue.
In 2017, Tina Muir was named by Women’s Running Magazine as one of 21 women changing the running world. With her hugely successful 'Running For Real' podcast and recent book 'Overcoming Amenorrhea: Get Your Period Back. Get Your Life Back', Tina is a true inspiration to female runners worldwide. And she's also now a mother!
Concerned about irregular/absent menstruation?

And it's not just all about ice - in 2011 he ran a marathon in Namib Desert, Southern Africa (35 degrees during the day) without water!
